As he tried out different project types in the early part of his career, he quickly found that the challenge of preserving and re-using old buildings fulfilled this desire. He finds the unique challenge of working on existing buildings to be personally satisfying and enjoys contributing to a diverse built environment while building sustainably by re-using old buildings. More recently, Luke has been focusing on better understanding the motivations behind a client’s decisions, knowing that the structural considerations of a project, while vital, are normally secondary to the true goals of a project. Luke uses this knowledge to prioritizes the success of a project, as defined by his clients, when determining appropriate structural solutions. He focuses on prioritizing architectural requirements, integrating the mechanical systems, and indicating when design options may be costly or difficult to build so that his clients may make informed decisions. Luke has specialized in existing building renovations and cultivated a deep technical knowledge base that allows him to work on most building and project types, recently running jobs ranging from existing wood building renovations to large concrete and steel buildings including work on adaptive reuse and high-rise projects.
